Endorse Our Vision of Ending Child Poverty in Wisconsin

Note, if you have collected offline petitions, instead of entering them yourself here please email them as an excel file to bakken@wichurches.org

We believe in a vision of ending child poverty in Wisconsin. We believe that the people of Wisconsin, working together, can cut child poverty in half in the next ten years. Seeking greater equity, our vision includes cutting racial disparities in child poverty in half. We are committed to evidence-based evaluation of progress.

All children have the right to nourishing food, shelter and stability. Our country is only as strong as the poorest among us.

In my work as a clinician, I have seen much loss in potential in children as a result of poverty, and much trauma in neighborhoods with high poverty. We cannot be an economic power when we leave a segment of the community behind, not harnessing their capacity to contribute in their own unique way.

Whenever one person, child or adult, is raised up out of poverty not only is their world better, but the world is better for everyone. This child then has a better chance at a healthy and productive life. This child could be the one that comes up with a cure for cancer, but not if he’s stuck in poverty, unable to become that educated person who can lead to new discoveries. Less poverty means less crime, less violence, less cost to society as a whole. What’s good for one is good for all.

2 main reasons – it’s a moral duty and it’s the sensible choice. It saves all kinds of unnecessary pain and expense, producing moral and economic bonuses for all the community to eliminate childhood poverty.

If we don’t have children in poverty, maybe that will keep them out of jails and prisons and save many tax dollars for the DOC
