We believe in a vision of ending child poverty in Wisconsin. We believe that the people of Wisconsin, working together, can cut child poverty in half in the next ten years. Seeking greater equity, our vision includes cutting racial disparities in child poverty in half. We are committed to evidence-based evaluation of progress.

There is no child in the state who has made a “choice” to be in poverty. Kids need food. Kids need stability in their housing and education. Kids need to be secure, not afraid. Everyone in every political party, religious group, every “class” can agree to that. This is not a political, partisan, or class problem; this is the problem of everyone who wants a functional society.

There’s not any question that children matter—the question is, why is this even an issue? As in, how can we have allowed things to get to this point—we know better!!! Every statistic proves that when children do better, society does better. Every program ever undertaken to improve the health and security of children has resulted in reduced costs to society, and increased success for everyone.

It’s the biggest no-brainer of all time.

A child living in poverty is less likely to succeed in an academic environment as their peers of a higher economic backgrounds. They are more susceptible to food insecurity, homelessness, and exposure to violence, abuse, and neglect. Wisconsin must do better for its children.

Child poverty places children in a position to be more vulnerable to abuse, lower academic achievement, involvement in the criminal justice system, etc.
